2008 COUNTY INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT

The indoor County Championships for both Women and Men of the Huntingdonshire Bowling Federation were once again a display of first class bowling, as is expected, from the best players in the County who played through qualifying rounds that started in October 2007. All the winners of County Championships take part in the National Indoor Finals of the English Bowling Federation, which will be held in the Newark, Nottingham Indoor Bowls Club on 23rd to 27th April 2008.
Women's Singles - England International, Michelle Barlow, was just to strong for last year's winner Heather McKillop.
Women's Pairs - Margaret Elstub & Heather McKillop winners last year took a good win against the usually competitive pairing of June Blackall & Jean Whittamore

Men's Singles - David Woolford, runner up in 2007, was able to take a one shot win against Geoff Barlow after a very close fought match in which the lead changed throughout
Men's Pairs -Derek Rose & Brian Brett took an early lead and looked in command only to loose form half way through to set up an exciting finish and eventually taking a close win against the experienced pair of David Dow & Derek Deller
Men's Rinks- This event promised to be a close event, which proved to be the case. Neil Swannell, Lindsey Swannell & Jamie Reynolds were never able to pull away from Derek Rose, Geoff Barlow & Brian Brett probably because all players know their opponents play so well. On 19th and 20th ends the Swannell's / Reynolds rink managed to get a single shot to give them a three shot lead coming into the last end. Both lead players delivered close to the jack so Geoff Barlow delivered a slightly overweight bowl to move the jack out of the head giving his team a two shot advantage Brian Brett with his last bowl was unable to get the extra shot resulting in a one shot win for Swannell's / Reynolds rink
Mixed Pairs - Winners Jane Baldwin & Robert Jepson were on top form to take an easy win against Jean Whittamore & John Hignett who conceded with two ends to play.
Mixed Rinks - In probably the best match and certainly the longest match of the championship Sandra Day, John McKee & Willie Day had a superb game against last years winners Jane Baldwin, Peter Holmes & John Higgnett. On the last end Sandra and Jane both put their lead shots on or very close to the jack with the advantage to Baldwin. John McKee with a fantastic shot gently bowled through the head to take the shot the remaining bowls were all very close but made no change to the score giving John & husband and wife Sandra & Willie a win by two shots after a three hour battle.
New for 2008 was a Victor Ludorum club championship, with a trophy presented by Jim & John Hatton of the Sawtry club. Players gained 2 points for a win or 1 point for runner up with the points allocated to their outdoor club - First winners were St. Ives winning by 2 points over Huntingdon.
