HUNTINGDONSHIRE lost a close Newton Trophy match to Northamptonshire on Saturday despite winning more rinks.

Heavy shot defeats for the rinks skipped by Peter Reason and Nigel Pratt, which went down 34-14 and 32-23 respectively, cost Hunts dear in an overall 154-158 defeat.

Wins for the teams led by Paul Payne, Steve Baker and John McNee, along with a draw for Tony Perry’s rink, gave Hunts the better of the rinks result, but Northants took the points win 15-7.

The margin was slightly greater in the Adams Trophy match at Huntingdon, where Hunts claimed three of the six rinks but still lost.

John Hignett’s rink won 37-27 and Tony Chapman’s saw off their opposition 31-22. John Waine and his team took a close rink on the final end to win 30-28.

However, heavy shot defeats in Huntingdonshire’s losing rinks swung the match in Northamptonshire’s favour.

John Stepney’s men lost 34-20 and Rob Jepson’s went down 36-20, with Kevin Bowers and his team narrowly missing out 28-24.
