HUNTINGDONSHIRE’s county EBF Bowls team began their challenge for the National Eversley Trophy in stunning style with a 10-4 win over reigning champions Northamptonshire.
Unbeaten for more than two years, the Northants side are favourites to retain the title for a third year running, but Hunts upset the odds as they made the most of home advantage in the first of their four group games.
With rinks led by Steve Baker and Mick Verlander both defeated, the former 21-13 and the latter 20-15, Northants could be excused for thinking things looked rosy. Geoff Barlow led his rink to a 23-14 win to redress the balance but there was jubilation for Hunts when Brian Brett, Derek Rose and Barry Dellar dispatched their opponents 31-10 to give Huntingdonshire an 82-65 shot win and the points.
