The Godmanchester Town II captain Nick Willmer sung the praises of Huntingdon & District’s rugby coach Damien Whales after he proved devastating with both bat and ball in their 52-run win against Southill Park on Saturday.

Whales hit 37 not out for the Hunts County Bats Division One side as they set their visitors a target of 253 for six – and took four wickets for 52 with Southill all out for 201.

With Godmanchester having failed to light up the division this year, it was a result that Willmer was more than happy with. “It was a very important game for us,” he said. “We needed to win to get our season back on track after a couple of losses, mainly due to availability issues.

“Southill Park are a good side and it took a good performance from the whole team to beat them. But a special mention must go to Damien Whales who was a star with bat and ball. We hope to be able to field a strong team each week now and make a push towards the top of the league.”

At the top, Huntingdon & District remain in the promotion chase after they beat Ramsey II by four wickets. Khaqan Arsal scored 42 as opening batsman for Huntingdon after taking three for 19 runs as Ramsey laboured to 126 all out, despite Elliot Smith’s 64 and Vince Woodward’s five for 51. Huntingdon reached 128 for six in the 21st over.

Eaton Socon II suffered another defeat in Division One despite a much improved all-round performance. Burghley Park batted first and made 178 for nine. Eaton closed on 150 for eight.

Two Waresley II batsman scored centuries in their brilliant nine-wicket win over Houghton & Wyton in Division Two.

Ashwin Reddy scored 111 and fellow opener Steve Warman was 102 not out when Waresley reached the home side’s total of 219 for nine from their 45 overs.

But the highest Hunts County Bats scorer on Saturday was Buckden’s Laurie Marsh – he hit 119 in their Division Three home win against Newborough.

Marsh was not out after Buckden reached 261 for four from their 45 overs and then took four wickets for 29 as they skittled their opponents out for 90 in 24.4 overs.

Adam Long was also in fine form as an all-rounder at the weekend when he scored 85 for Little Paxton and took five wickets for 12 in their Division Five Hunts derby at home to Brampton. However, Long was on the losing side with Brampton’s team effort earning a two-wicket victory with 159 for eight.

Alconbury’s Paul Suckling was also in form with a knock of 82 in their Division Two win.
