HUNTINGDONSHIRE Athletics Club was successful at the annual Cambridgeshire County Cross Country Championships in Priory Park on Sunday, leaving St Neots with gold, silver and bronze medals.

James Downing won the under-13 boys three kilometre race more than five minutes faster than the other racers after falling at the start, and the team won bronze.

Faye McLellan, 13, finished fifth in the U13 girl's three kilometre race and Helen West, 15, finished seventh in the U17 women's race, with team mates Emma Butcher (eighth) and Sammi Skinner (11th) earning a team silver medal.

Downing, McLellan, West and Butcher qualified for the national inter-counties cross country championship in Nottingham on the March 7.

On the same day at Lea Valley, London, the Hunts AC also performed well at the South of England Indoor Athletics Championships.

Christian Roberts, 18, won his 400 metre heat in 52 seconds, but pulled out in the semi-final after feeling a tightening in his hamstrings.

Sam Palmer 16, finished sixth in the U20 men's 400 metre heat and Ian McLaren, 16, finished sixth in the U17 men's 400 metre heat.
