Giles Scott is the early leader at the Sailing World Cup regatta in Weymouth and believes his consistency on the opening day bodes extremely well for the rest of the week.

The Huntingdon star is competing in the Finn class and lies top of the overall standings, ahead of fellow Brit Ben Cornish, following yesterday’s action.

A lack of wind ensured all racing was cancelled on Wednesday but with a healthier breeze 24 hours later, four-time world champion Scott sailed impressively to finish second, fifth and first in the day’s three races.

The regatta is serving as final preparation for the Olympic Games later this summer and Scott is adamant there is more to come from him.

“It was a successful day but there were still a few errors,” explained Scott.

“I only finished fifth in the second race after making a really poor start and getting the first beat all wrong.

“That put me on the back foot but I managed to pull back a lot of distance and few places which is always good.

“The start was less than ideal though. In the last one I got that right, nailed the start, managed to get clear and actually managed to sail away so it was nice to get the race win.

“Winning the last race does give me confidence heading into the next day. If I had got a second, then a first then a fifth you’d come off the water feeling annoyed with the fifth.

“There’s a lot of races to get through though. We’ve done three and on a day like today you have to be consistent because it is so variable. I think I managed to be the most consistent, which is pleasing.”

The World Cup regatta continues in Weymouth today and tomorrow before concluding with Sunday’s medal races which are worth double points.

Wednesday was gloriously sunny but the lack of breeze meant that despite a couple of false starts racing ultimately wasn’t possible – much to the frustration of many of the sailors.

But Scott says he took the delays and uncertainty all in his stride.

“You get used to not racing some days,” added the 28 year-old. “When you look out the window and you see it’s all glass out there you know you’re likely to not be doing anything.

“We’ve had so many days waiting around that you do get used to it.”
