HUNTINGDON Indoor Bowls Clubs ladies retained the County League title by just a single point. After a hard season's work, Huntingdon held onto their crown on a nerve-racking final day to hold off the charge of Ely. Ladies captain Joan Hatton breathed a sigh of relief after her girls took the three points needed from the match against St Neots. "I knew it would be close after both the away rinks had been beaten - but it was alright on the day as the home rinks did the business. But one point is too close for comfort." At St Neots, Nikki Verlander's rink fought gamely to hold up the home side but went down 14-26 and Margaret Elstub's rink offered little encouragement as they were beaten 30-9. The Huntingdon home rinks saved the day, with Jenny Diamond leading her ladies to an accomplished 24-16 win. The performance of the day went to Heather Brace's formidable line-up, who calmed nerves and swept to an impressive 30-10 win. Although the final shots score finished 82-77 in favour of St Neots, Huntingdon's efforts had earned them a 5-3 share to retain the trophy.
