UNITED COUNTIES LEAGUE CUP

Peterborough Northern Star 6-4 Huntingdon Town

HUNTINGDON Town manager Ricky Marheineke thinks Saturday’s FA Cup opponents Daventry Town won’t be much better than Peterborough Northern Star, who hit his side for six on Tuesday night.

Scott Beeny, Josh Crick, Joe Furness and Gerard Evans all scored for Huntingdon when they travelled to Northern Star in the first round of the United Counties League Cup – but four goals weren’t enough against a side that boasts what Marheineke believes is one of the best forward lines in the United Counties League.

“Peterborough Northern Star are one of the best teams in the Premier Division and the four they have up front are four of the best players in the league.

“That forward line is as good as any in that league: they score goals for fun.”

When Furness scored Huntingdon’s third, just after half time, Huntingdon were leading 3-2 – but Star’s attacking force upped their game in the last quarter and secured their route through to the next round in style.

“I don’t think Daventry will be much better that Northern Star,” said Marheineke. “I was actually pleased with how we played for 70 minutes and we have a great chance on Saturday if we play like that.

“Obviously, Daventry are in a higher division than us and they will be favourites – but this is the cup of dreams. You always have a chance in the FA Cup.”

The game against Daventry will be Town’s third game in this year’s competition – and they are the only surviving team from the Huntingdonshire area.

If they win this one, the club will receive 3,000 in prize money to add to the 2,250 they have already picked up following the victories over Long Eaton and Bugbrooke St Michaels in the extra preliminary and preliminary rounds.

“There’s a lot at stake,” admitted the manager. “It’s a big game!”

It certainly is. And it kicks off at Jubilee Park at 3pm.
