HUNTINGDON & District missed out on promotion to the TuckerGardner Premier League by finishing second in the Hunts County Bats Hunts League for the sixth successive season.

You wouldn’t think that was a record to be proud of, but that’s where you are wrong according to the team’s captain Yasir Shafiq, who told The Hunts Post: “Yes, we are disappointed, but we have enjoyed the season and we have come second with more than 300 points and still lost the league.

“We have played some great cricket and we are very proud of what we have achieved.

“We are a strong team and we only lost two games, the same as Blunham – they were lucky to go up because the had one more game off because of rain. They got the luck but we are still happy with the way we played.”

Blunham took the Division One title with their three-wicket win over Southill Park. Huntingdon beat Waresley II, who have been relegated, by seven wickets.

Godmanchester Town II beat Ramsey II by six wickets in a low socring game.

Eaton Socon II’s won promotion to Division One for the first time with an easy 118-run victory over Peterborough Town III.

Eaton made 228-5 thanks to Bob Nicklin’s 65, Olly Dalrymple’s 55 and 46 from Will Hall. Eaton then bowled Peterborough out for just 105 with Matt Keating taking 4-15.

Warboys II have been relegated from Division Two and will be replaced by Houghton & Wyton after they won promotion from Division Three despite being outplayed by a strong Huntingdon & District II side and losing their final game by eight wickets.

Julian Hales hit 63 but Houghton’s innings fell away and the team were all out for 195. An outstanding maiden 50 by youngster Murray Reid laid the foundation for a comfortable win for Huntingdon for whom Naved Ahmed took 4-25.

Houghton’s disappoitment was short-lived however as the news broke that the club had beaten Castor & Ailsworth to the title having got the necessary five bonus points with one game still remaining.

In the TuckerGardner Premier, Eaton Socon are closing in on promotion to Division One after just one season in the two-division league - and the captain Terry Day has told The Hunts Post the team will only have themselves to blame if they win don’t promotion to the top flight.

With just two games to go, Eaton are in the second promotion spot with Abington to play on Saturday. A good batting first win from that home game could be enough for the club, who only won promotion from the Hunts County Bats Hunts League, last time out to win a second successive promotion.

“If we win both of our games then it’s certain,” said Day. “We knew we were in with a chance when we came up and we have been near the top all season – we are pretty close now.”

Eaton moved up to seceond in the table, behind Saffron Walden, with a draw at Newborough. Batting first, Eaton struggled early on and found themselves 48-3 before a brilliant 171 run fourth-wicket partnership between Ray Tudor (89) and Carl Baker (56) allowed a early declaration on 243-6. Despite having 51 overs, Eaton failed to bowl Newborough out for the win, holding on for the draw at 153-8 despite a superb spell from Ben Gowling who took 4-34.

Likely to be taking their place in Division Two is St Ives Town, who have had a terrible season in Division One and are set for the drop – barring a miracle. They suffered a 48-run win at Foxton on Saturday.

In Division One there was a three-wicket win for Ramsey over Godmanchester Town with the Rams still chasing leaders Wisbech Town who have a 25 point lead with two games to go.

Chethan William took five wickets for 34 runs in the defeat with Ramsey’s Luke Stewart taking 3-4.

Ramsey are away at Waresley this Saturday; Waresley drew away at Sawston at the weekend with Nigel Buckingham-Jones taking 4-52.

Back in Division Two, Warboys secured a two-wicket win at home to Khalsa with Dan Wright hitting 65 runs and Matthew Lavender taing five wickets in just eight overs.
