With two games left, they are 14 points clear of Ickwell, who have played a game more, and must be thinking of a champagne party in a couple of weeks.

Kumpukkal provided a spectacular base to their 250-5 against Godmanchester Town II. He struck 17 fours and four sixes in a sparkling 127, Craig Leigh (38) and Navid Ahmed (33) sharing of 58 and 156 respectively.

Godmanchester were never going to match that after slumping to 55-4, but James Howells (53) and Alejandro Freeman (50no) ensured they only fell 77 runs short.

Openers Damian Clarke, who struck a magnificent 153, and James Woodward (66) set up Ramsey second team’s remarkable batting effort to overhaul Hampton’s 293-5 with seven wickets and four balls to spare, while Eaton Socon’s second string were restricted to 158-6 in their 45 overs and beaten by a seven-wicket margin at the hands of Nassington II.

Waresley second team’s Division 2 title ambitions were probably shot down by basement outfit Alconbury, for whom Gary Cole (4-32) and Richard Ewing (4-19) did the damage as they were shot out for only 90.

Pat Ellerbeck’s three wickets gave the title wannabe’s some hope, but Fiaz Mirza (38) and Sid Davis (29) swung it the way of their neighbours.

Houghton & Wyton came a cropper at the hands of Orton Park after being sent packing for only 85 – they were beaten inside 13 overs – while Sawtry’s Dave Atkinson took 6-35 to ensure his team’s modest 134 (Ian Bonsall 52) was enough for a comfortable 68-run victory.

Brady West was another bowler to emerge with a five-for as Warboys II came up trumps against Blunham II in Division 3.

He wound up with 5-25 and Martin Lloyd 3-23 as Blunham were ripped out for 76. It looked a tricky target when Warboys lost three quick wickets, but Liam Gaynor’s unbeaten 37 made sure there was no cause for concern.

Upwood could only field nine players against leaders Bharat Sports – and paid the price as they were battered by 10 wickets in a game which lasted less than 28 overs.

Hemingford Park claimed a rare Division 4 success when they chased down seven-man Ickwell’s 197-4 with ease, while Warboys III conceded to Castor & Ailsworth II.
