Chairman Doug McIlwain has made a passionate plea to the people of Huntingdon to get behind the town’s football team.

Former mayor McIlwain is desperate for the bottom-of-the-table strugglers to receive better support as they bid to survive in the tough United Counties League Premier Division.

Town have not won a match of any sort since January and are yet to pick up a point so far this season, but hopes remain high that boss Scott Witherall can mastermind a great escape.

Huntingdon have another crucial home game on Saturday against Newport Pagnell after losing 3-0 to Yaxley at Jubilee Park last night (Wednesday).

Speaking ahead of that loss, McIlwain said: “Our players and management are giving there all in a difficult time for the club and they really need the backing of the Huntingdon public.

“I’ve dedicated myself to this town and it would be great to see people turn out in force. That would really give the lads a boost. Every game is a cup final for us as we try to get that first point or that first win on the board.

“A good result would make a huge difference to everyone and do wonders for the confidence of the players.

“Scott has done a great job in injecting some positivity since taking over as manager and has the full support of myself and the board for the rest of the season. We all believe we can achieve our goal of surviving in the Premier Division.”

Defending has been Town’s biggest problem this season. They have leaked 72 goals in 15 games so far – that’s an average just shy of five-per-match.

McIlwain revealed he is hopeful of attracting sponsorship which could possibly finance the capture of a couple of experienced players. The club are operating without a playing budget this season but that situation will be reviewed at Christmas.

Trevor Nightingill and Anthony Ganner have been appointed as joint bosses of the club’s reserve side. Jake Shepherd completes a three-man management team.
