A Cambridgeshire County League derby clash came complete with penalty controversy last Saturday.

Hemingfords United saw a spot-kick disallowed even though it was scored during their 1-1 draw at Eaton Socon in the Kershaw Premier Division.

Andy Ging was the man to tuck away the penalty early in the second half when Hemingfords were trailing to a Joe Keech goal for their hosts, but his effort went through the side of the net and the referee gave a goal kick.

New Hemingfords boss Cameron Anderson, who missed the game, said: “I saw something on Twitter and couldn’t believe what I was reading!

“The lads were then raging in our group chat after the game. One of them took a pic which clearly shows a big hole in the net.

“They obviously felt very hard done by and apparently the Eaton Socon players couldn’t believe what happened either.”

Hemingfords regained their composure to level later in the second half through Harry Sargent as they picked up their first point of the new campaign.

Even Eaton Socon manager Mark Garwood was left flabbergasted by the situation. He said: “I’ve honestly never seen anything like it.

“It looked like the penalty went in, went through the net and bounced against the fence behind the goal, but the referee said it went wide and gave a goal kick.”

Gareth Owens bagged a brace as Brampton claimed their first win in another top-flight derby duel.

Matt Gearing also found the net as Wayne Ambler’s side triumphed 3-2 at league newcomers Eynesbury Rovers Reserves.

The Rovers’ second string had picked up their first success last Tuesday when thumping Cherry Hinton 6-1 – a rout which featured a Shane Fox hat-trick and a Lee Bassett brace.

St Neots Town Reserves are experiencing a slow start to their first Kershaw Premier Division season following relegation from Division Two of the Spartan South Midlands League last season.

A 1-1 draw against Brampton last Wednesday has provided their only point so far. They were pipped by a single goal by early leaders Foxton.

There was another round of midweek fixtures last night (Tuesday) and tonight (Wednesday) in the Cambridgeshire County League.
