The eyes of the horse racing world might be on the Cheltenham Festival this week, but there’s also action closer to home at Huntingdon Racecourse.

The local track stages a seven-race fixture on Wednesday – and the fairer sex will be in the spotlight.

The 188Bet Lady Riders’ Handicap Hurdle is the feature with 2015 victor Galactic Power among 19 provisional entries for the contest.

It’s a race that has been a stepping stone for up-and-coming female riders. The 2014 winner, Lizzie Kelly, is the only female rider to have won a Grade One race over fences. She will also become the first lady jockey for 33 years to ride in the Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday.

The previous year Lucy Alexander, the first woman to win the conditional jockeys’ title and Scotland’s first ever female professional rider, triumphed.

In addition to the live action, which gets underway at 1.45pm, races from Cheltenham will also be shown on televisions around the track.

General manager Liam Johnson said: “This is always a popular fixture and it is brilliant that female jockeys can enjoy a day in the spotlight.”

The fixture is the latest of Huntingdon’s #GoRacing days. Adult tickets are £10 in advance, or £15 on the day. They can be bought online at http://huntingdon.thejockeyclub.co.uk or by calling 0844 579 3007.
