St Ives Boxing Academy were in seventh heaven - after completing a clean sweep of successes at their own show.

All seven of the fighters from Steve Whitwell’s town stable were victorious in the ring at the Corn Exchange last Friday night.

Double national champion Harli Whitwell (15) was arguably the star turn on her home bill and she didn’t have it all her own way against Ellie Hopkins from Braunstone ABC.

They served up a relentless battle with Whitwell proving she can mix it up when necessary on her way to a points victory.

It extended her unbeaten run in the current season and confirmed her standing as one of the favourites for the Junior ABA Championships in March.

Schoolboy Levi Browning (12) showed how much he has improved this season when stopping Harry Potts from Phoenix ABC.

Browning controlled the contest with some skilful boxing which earned a knockdown at the end of the opening round.

He kept the pedal to the metal in the second round to floor his opponent a second time before the referee stepped in.

Browning’s exploits earned him the boxer-of-the-night award which was presented by St Ives Boxing Academy pro star Tyler Goodjohn.

Browning’s older brother Tommy (13) made it a family double with an impressive display against the vastly more experienced Mason Stewart from Chesthunt ABC.

The home fighter landed shots with ease and opponent Stewart had no answer to his aggressive style during a bout eventually stopped in the third round.

Jack Smith made a fine debut in the senior ranks when seeing off Ben Vaughan from Lydney ABC.

Smith displayed skill and maturity as he selected his shots wisely and rarely put a foot wrong.

It was an ideal confidence-booster with the Senior ABA Championships fast approaching.

Also at senior level, Mohammed Hassan produced his best performance to date.

Hassan used his trademark slick, counter-punching style to get the better of Perry Riley from Strood ABC.

An emphatic points victory highlighted that Hassan is a very tough customer when fully fit and performing at his best.

Aaron Francis entertained the home fans by winning a thriller against Kettering ABC man Andy Cox.

The ding-dong duel had the crowd on their feet and Francis earned the judges’ verdict after a scrap in which Cox had received a standing count in the second round.

Marco Pitta had to settle for a split decision in his debut outing for St Ives Boxing Academy after joining the club from Cambs Police.

Pitta was always chasing the fight against a cagey Jordan Hayes of the 2Para Army Boxing team based in Colchester.

St Ives Boxing Academy trainer Steve Whitwell said: “It was one of our best shows so far with 17 bouts in total.

“I’m very happy with our night’s work. A clean sweep at our own show is very satisfying.

“Everyone left very happy and looking forward to seeing this amazing team in action again.”

Newcomers Michael Draper (10) and Lewis Smith (13) showed a lot of potential when making their debuts in skills bouts against Paul Saunders and Vijay Kumar of Trumpington ABC respectively.
