St Ives 1sts continued their late-season charge for a second successive East Men’s League promotion last Saturday.

The leading local side stretched their unbeaten run to seven matches when thumping Pelicans 1sts 4-1 to record a fourth consecutive victory.

Third-placed St Ives fell behind before being denied an equaliser when Garth Mooney hit a post. However, he did succeed in finding the net to level before the break and brother, Rory, completed the turnaround early in the second half.

Mike Jenner stretched the advantage before Garth Mooney completed the scoring with David McCarter being denied by a late goal-line clearance.

A single goal from Tim Jones was enough to continue St Ives 2nds’ title challenge in Division Four North-West as they beat strugglers Bourne Deeping 4ths 1-0.

And the 3rds maintained their push for promotion with a 2-0 victory against Cambridge City 6ths in Division Five North-West. Matt Lovell and Joe Warr provided the goals.

St Ives 4ths were emphatic winners in their penultimate Division Six North-West (South) outing of the season. Rob Brand (2), Alex Clark, Tom King-Venables and Mark Sadler all struck in a 5-0 success at bottom side Ely City 3rds.

The 5ths were beaten 5-1 by champions Cambridge South 4ths at the same level. Neil Tuffin hit their goal in the second period.

It was a miserable weekend for the club’s ladies section in the East Women’s League.

St Ives 1sts were condemned to relegation from Division One North following a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Norwich City 1sts. Jules Griffiths hit a consolation goal for a side now certain to finish in the danger-zone.

And the club’s 2nds are also on the brink of the drop after a 4-0 defeat to Spalding 1sts in Division Two North-West. They remain six points from safety with four games to go.

St Ives 3rds have fared better in Division Four North-West (South). A goalless draw against Newmarket 3rds last Saturday preserved their fourth position in the standings.

They missed a golden opportunity to claim victory when Mel Wood saw a penalty flick saved in the second half.

Huntingdon 2nds triumphed at St Ives 4ths in a Division Five North-West (South) derby clash.

Jenn Lester struck twice to help the Huntingdon side to a 4-2 success. Zoe Skinner and Rebekah Bell also found the net for the winning team while Sophie Burney and Maureen Wickson provided the goals for St Ives 4ths.

Huntingdon 1sts’ trip to bottom side Bury St Edmunds 3rds in Division Three North-West was postponed due to a frozen pitch.
