They say all good things must come to an end . . . and that was the case for St Ives 1sts last Saturday.

They slipped to a first East Men’s League defeat for more than a year when being beaten 4-3 by Norwich Dragons 1sts in Division Two North.

St Ives fell behind in the final seconds of the first half and then conceded three times in the space of 10 minutes early in the second period.

They fought back valiantly as Garth Mooney struck before Adam Graham bagged a brace, but St Ives were unable to avoid a first loss in 27 games stretching back to September, 2016.

St Ives 2nds were beaten by another set of Division Four North-West promotion hopefuls. They went down 4-2 against Cambridge South 3rds despite twice hitting the front through a Mike Jenner strike and a Michael England penalty stroke.

There was also defeat for St Ives 4ths as they were seen off 5-3 by table-topping Cambridge South 4ths in Division Six North-West (South).

They hit the front in the opening minute as John Bowles put away a penalty after Ben Rowbotham was upended by the South goalkeeper.

Rowbotham then found the net himself on the stroke of half-time to keep his side in the contest after the leaders, who are yet to drop point a this season, had grabbed three goals.

Rowbotham turned provider as the 4ths again reduced their arrears to one goal during the second half, but a late goal from a penalty corner ended their hopes of collecting a fine point.

There was a positive result for the club at that level as the 5ths beat Ely City 3rds 2-0 thanks to strikes from Adrian Howson and Jonathan Clarke on a day when some woeful finishing prevented a much more emphatic success.

But the best result of all last Saturday was provided by St Ives 3rds. They enjoyed derby success as goals from Michael Wheeler (2), Charles Budgett and Nathaniel Edwards earned a 4-1 win against St Neots 4ths which came complete with the added satisfaction of knocking their local rivals out of top spot.

St Ives Ladies 1sts are still searching for an elusive first success of the East Women’s League season.

They were outclassed by Watton 1sts in a 5-0 defeat in Division One North last Saturday. It would have been even heavier but for some excellent work from goalkeeper Ness Brown.

The two other St Ives female sides in action at the weekend fared considerably better as they recorded impressive results.

Pauline Hammond and Helen Seabourne hit two goals apiece as the 3rds thumped Haverhill 2nds to extend their winning run in Division Four North-West (South) to four matches.

Frankie Walder and Evie Bennett also found the net in the 6-1 victory.

The 4ths recorded a 5-0 success against basement side Ely City 3rds in Division Five North-West (South).

Phoebe McInroy hit a hat-trick and Emily Saul grabbed the other two goals.
