HOCKEY: It’s a Matt finish for St Ives 1sts as they see off a set of students

Man-of-the-match Matt Bamford hit the winning goal as St Ives 1sts continued their unbeaten start to the new East Men’s League season.
The club’s leading lights have made a fine start to life in Division Two North after winning promotion last season. They came from behind to win for the third time in their opening four matches when beating Cambridge University 3rds last Saturday.
James Harris levelled with a rocket shot following a short corner before Bamford produced an improvised finish to settle the contest after Mike Jenner’s initial shot was kept out.
St Ives 2nds reeled off a fourth successive victory to maintain their position at the Division Four North-West summit.
Tim Jones hit a hat-trick in a 7-1 drubbing of St Neots 2nds. Neil Fassam, Michael England, Rory Mooney and Oliver Cooke joined him on the scoresheet.

Oliver Clinton and Miles Jones hit the goals as the 3rds drew 2-2 with Welllingborough in Division Five North-West, while the in-house bragging rights belong to St Ives 4ths.
They dished out a 7-1 drubbing to their 5ths stablemates in a Division Six North-West (South) clash.

Mark Sadler and Tom King Venables both hit braces for the victors with Jacob Parker, Simon Dew and Jon Clarke also on target as they recorded a second successive win. Alex Thompson provided the consolation goal for the 5ths.
St Ives Ladies 1sts are still waiting for their first East Women’s League win of the season after suffering Division One North derby defeat last Saturday.
They were beaten 2-1 at Huntingdonshire rivals St Neots after conceding twice in the opening half.
Vicky Leighton halved the arrears when converting a penalty flick, but St Ives were unable to claw their way back onto level terms.
St Ives 2nds were also beaten as they went down 3-1 to Cambridge University 2nds in Division Two North-West.
Not even the excellence of stand-in goalkeeper Tracey Jago could prevent the students from opening a two-goal advantage, but St Ives hit back when Julie Drummond chipped in a smart finish.
They applied plenty of pressure when searching for an equaliser in the second period, but eventually conceded again on the counter-attack.
St Ives 3rds enjoyed a feast of goals as they bagged a first success of the campaign in Division Four North-West (South).
Hannah King, Alice Kemp and Melanie Wood all struck twice apiece in an 8-0 drubbing of Wisbech 3rds. Anna Banks and Beth Paton also found the net.
Emily Saul hit the only goal as St Ives 4ths continued their pleasing Division Five North-West (South) start with a second successive 1-0 win. Cambridge South 4ths were the latest victims.
