Two St Ives teams served up a game of two halves in the East Men’s League last Saturday.

The in-house derby clash between the club’s 4ths and 5ths proved to be a thriller at the One Leisure Outdoor Centre.

It eventually went the way the Division Six North-West (South) formbook suggested it would, with the higher-placed 4ths prevailing 5-2, but only after they had mounted a second-half fightback having fallen behind at the break.

John Wildin handed them an early lead, but they allowed complacency to creep in and the 5ths capitalised through Jacob Parker and Langton Takawira to go in ahead at the break.

The 4ths came out firing in the second period, though, and parity was soon restored as Trefor Jones netted.

Tom King-Venables then prodded the hosts into the lead and added a second later in the game, with stand-in skipper Richard Corbett also among the goals.

St Ives 2nds remain hot on the heels of the leaders in Division Four North-West after recording a 7-2 win over Alford and District.

Mike England was in superb form as he netted a hat-trick to set the hosts on course for victory, while Neil Fassam also weighed in with a brace.

The win keeps St Ives in third place, just three points behind table-toppers Kettering, and just a single point behind Cambridge City 5ths, who currently sit in second.

Stand-in captain England was first on the scoresheet for the St Ives side as he slotted home a penalty corner, before Fassam added a second by deflecting Matt Jago’s strike beyond the goalkeeper.

Though Alford pulled a goal back, the two-goal margin was restored before half-time through Alec Bryden, who finished nearly with a reverse stick shot.

The hosts carried their momentum into the second half and Fassam added a fourth goal early in proceedings.

Oscar Bryden added a fifth from a penalty corner before England struck twice more to complete his treble. Alford netted a consolation late on.

St Ives’ 1sts were also in action last Saturday, easing to a 4-0 success over Leadenham.

Alex Prestage and Michael Jenner both struck twice in a routine win for

the locals, who remain top of Division Three North-West.

St Ives 3rds completed a near-perfect weekend for the club’s male section by collecting a narrow win at Kettering 2nds. Benjamin Joss struck twice in a 2-1 triumph in Division Five North-West.
