Daily Mail Cup - Round 1

Hinchingbrooke School 76 Brooke Weston CTC 7

A FORTNIGHT of intensive training paid off for Hinchingbrooke as they overpowered their visitors from Northamptonshire.

Pupils from the sixth form and Year 11 teamed up to good effect on an immaculate playing surface.

The home side were ahead after just 50 seconds when centre Grant Hobbs burst through to cross and the quick start was followed up by a brace of tries from fly half Wayne Bradley.

The pattern continued with tries for Andy Coombs, Chris Webb and a second score for Hobbs.

The half finished with a fine solo try from full back Alex Anderson on his first team debut - the Stags U16 player enjoying a solid performance under the pressure of high balls from the visitors.

Hinchingbrooke rotated at half-time and Jack Collins made his mark on the game with a number of determined runs from midfield, using his dynamic attacking style to set a platform for the backs to utilise the quick ball with devastating effect.

Captain James Anderson added a try two minutes into the second period before winger Bob Knight added two scores of his own.

Josh Styles, Charlie Ward and Greg Southgate all joined in the fun before Brooke Weston grabbed a consolation try through an interception.

The scoring was completed two minutes from time when Hinchingbrooke scored a fantastic team try, finished off by back row Dan Haggard.

Coach Chris Pape said: "This was an impressive start to out campaign but we will face sterner tests in the next round - starting with a match against Longsands in the second round."

* Huntingdon Stags U16s battled their way to an 8-0 victory against Saffron Walden with Tom Morgan scoring the only try of the game.

Good work from James Turner and Alex Anthony helped set up Morgan for his first half score and the Stags man added a second half penalty to bring his personal tally to eight. Greg Smith was man of the match for Huntingdon.

* St Ives U17s lost out 24-12 in an exciting encounter at Kettering.

Dan Breed and Tom Brown combined nicely to set up Steve Hehir to open the scoring under the posts and Breed converted.

A defensive lapse allowed the home side back into the game and the visitors went in trailing 12-7 at half-time.

Flanker Simon Dunn's departure with a broken hand left St Ives depleted but man of the match Matt Nice managed to cross in the corner to keep Saints in touching distance. However, Saints were punished for missing too many final passes and Kettering put the game out of sight.
