THE junior elite boys from Huntingdon Gymnastics Club enjoyed a medal winning bonanza over the last two weekends – hauling in an abundance of great results.

The Huntingdon boys played a significant part in the East region winning five of seven team golds and one of two team silvers on offer, as well as an individual silver medal and two bronze.

William Mas started the ball rolling last weekend, taking bronze at the Elite grades and Harry O’Driscol took bronze in the Setwork Challenge.

HGC team-mates Tony Duchars and Charlie Hutchinson, meanwhile, also competed well at the events in Leicester.

The Setwork finals, held in Birmingham, saw Owen Harrison starting the weekend success with an individual silver in Level 2 at the club grades this Saturday.

Along with team-mate Jake Jarman they took team gold, while Patrick Murphy followed with a fourth-place finish, his efforts securing a team gold in Level 3.

The three boys have also made selection - from a pool of 200 - for the national reward squad at Lilleshall in June.

James Cook and Joe Brown were players in the Level 4 team that also took gold and the Level 5 team, with HGC team-mate Jacob Taylor, again took the gold.

On Sunday, Christian Norman, at his first national final, competed well at the Regional Performance Level.

Adding to the tally Benji Eyre and Tony Duchars in Level 5 took team gold.

Adding to last weekend’s bronze medal, William Mas claimed individual silver and the last team gold.

Ben Howells, elite boys coach at HGC and East regional coach said: “I’m ecstatic with the last winning streak of results.

“A lot of hard work, focus and dedication from all parties have well and truly paid off.

“Claiming both the prestigious regional trophies - the Bob Currier and Paul Blakeborough awards - is no mean feat and we at Huntingdon and the East region have a great team of coaches and gymnasts.

“Huntingdon Gymnastics Club can be proud to have had a big part to play as the East headed the leader board by a 40-mark margin in the Club competition and by 10 marks in the Performance competition.

“We were the strongest region from 15 and the depth of results from both HGC and the East was inspirational.”
