Old Tottonians II 30 St Neots III 10

SAINTS' hope of winning the Greene King Plate were dashed by a powerful Old Tottonians team in their semi-final clash last weekend.

Saints were slow to start and conceded almost immediately as the home team powered over for a try.

The score shocked Saints into action and they were soon on the attack, taking the game to Old Totts and twice coming close to scoring themselves.

Despite the sustained pressure, Old Totts scored again, their powerful backs linking well and going over in spite of some heroic Saints defence.

Fitch pulled back three points soon after from a penalty to make the score 12-3 at half-time and keep Saints in the game.

Saints started the better side in the second half but a series of missed tackles saw Old Totts cross the line once more.

St Neots replied with some aggressive forward play, winning the ball for the backs before Dan Fox embarked on a powerful, swerving run to score. James Fitch added the conversion.

An injury to MoM Neil Rook saw him taken off, which was a blow to Saints, but they battled hard to limit the deficit against a good side.

SAINTS took on and beat Palmerians last Saturday in a friendly in preparation for their final league fixture of the season.

Saints lost the toss and played into a strong head-wind throughout the first half.

With the wind blowing the ball around, set pieces were ever-present and Saints struggled to gain any territorial advantage.

The score-line reflected this as the visitors went into the break 17-10 ahead.

The second half was a complete contrast to the first, as the Saints' forwards dominated set-plays and secured quality second phase possession through the excellent support play of back-rowers Jim Warmington and Pete Arnold.

With quick ball to work with, the backs experimented with set moves, getting over the line often enough to register a convincing win.

Saints try-scorers were MoM James Sayer (2), Martyn Allen (2), Russell Warrington, Jamie Swanston, Dan Miller, Dave Gamble (2), John Morris and Pete Arnold .

Saints have their final league match of the season this Saturday against Aylestone Athletic. A win would give them a third-place finish in the league.
