HEMMINGFORDS United of the Cambridgeshire FA County Senior A division have scored an astonishing 18 goals in two Scott Gatty Cup games and are now just two games away from retaining the trophy that they won last season.

After beating Hampton Sports 9-0 last month and then remarkably repeating that scoreline against Sawtry on Saturday, they will now play Powerleague AFC, the Peterborough team who put St Ives Rangers out of the competition 5-3 after extra time.

Hemmingfords’ manager Sy Green said: “We beat St Neots Reserves in the final last season and our aim to to win the trophy again - I don’t want to blow our own trumpet too much but we reckon we’ve got a pretty good chance. We beat Powerleague 3-2 last we played them, there’s no reason why we can’t beat them again.

“We’re ambitious and are third in the league too so we are hoping to win the double - if not the tripple because we are still in another cup comeptition.”

In the game against Dan Davidson scored four times with Iwan Lewis getting on the scoresheet twice each and Kieran Crow, Robert Green and Hanif Ali all once. On Saturday, while largely untroubled goalkeeper James Else kept another clean sheet, Davidson took his competition total five with another goal, Crow scored four himself, Lewis got another and the manager got two himself.

“It was good to see Dan on the scoresheet at Halloween as his nickname is ‘Creepy’,” said Green.

Their opponents in the next round, Powerleague, beat Rangers 5-3 after extra time with dangerman James Picillo scoring a hat trick and the other goals coming from Dan Irwin and Joe Stewart.

In the other semi final, Senior B side Fenstanton will take on Stilton after another astonishing result.

It was St Neots Town Reserves of the Peterborough & District Premier that Fenstanton beat - convincingly too, 5-0 - and they will now take on a Stilton who beat Huntingdon Town Reserves 5-4 on penalties after neither side could find the net in 120 minutes.

Fenstanton’s goalscorers were Adam Berril, who tapped in a Josh Turner pass late in the first half, Ollie Barnard, who made it 2-0 on the sroke of half time, and Turner who scored homself a second-half hat trick.

Spare a thought for Sawtry though, who were given that 9-0 drubbing by Hemmingfords; the Peterborough & District League Division One side only turned up for the match with 11 men and when the referee asked one of them to remove a piece of jewlery - he refused, so they were down to 10 before a ball was kicked. “We did have a bit of an advantage,” said Green. “Though we would haven beaten them anyway...”
