TEAM GB Olympic hockey player Hannah Macleod became the fourth of four Huntingdonshire athletes to win a medal at the London 2012 Games on Friday.

Having had the disappointment of being a member of the women’s ladies hockey team that lost to the eventual winners the Nederlands in the semi final of the competition, Macleod and co beat New Zealand in their third-fourth place play-off game on Friday evening to take the bronze medal.

Her bronze meant that all four Huntingdonshire athletes competing at the Olympics ended up as medal winners.

Gymnasts Louis Smith, 23, and Sam Oldham, 19, were the first to win medals when Team GB’s men’s artistic gymnastics team won bronze at the North Greenwich Arena in the first week. Then Smith added a sliver to his bronze when he came an extremely close second to Hungarian Krisztian Berki in the individual pommel horse competition.

Former Crosshall Junior School and Longsands College pupil Robbie Grabarz, 24, won a bronze in the high jump last week - and then Macleod, who attended Hinchingbrooke School and played for St Ives Hockey Club, completed the set when Britain beat New Zealand 3-1 on Friday.

The team captain Kate Walsh told the BBC: “We were heartbroken after our semi final.

“The team was devastated, people couldn’t talk, they were absolutely gutted. Everything we dreamed of was that gold medal. We knew we couldn’t get it, but we vowed that we weren’t going to go home empty-handed.

“We knew that we had the game, we knew that we had the mental capacity. We just had to put it all together.”

Team GB’s celebrations, that greeted the final whistle against New Zealand, were in sharp contrast to the reaction after the semi final loss when there were tears.
