One of Huntingdon’s finest sportsmen has called time on his career.

Dan Keatings won a host of major international medals, including Commonwealth Games and European Championships gold, in his chosen sport.

He was one of the men responsible for the rise of Great Britain into a gymnastics force, along with fellow Huntingdon Gymnastics Club star Louis Smith.

But at the age of 27, Keatings, pictured, who trained at the town facility for around 15 years, has left his days of competition behind him.

He said: “I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has followed and supported me throughout my career.

“I feel sad that it has now finished, but I think my time is up and I’m excited to see what heights the younger generation can take British gymnastics to.

“I’m having a break at the moment, but I’m sure I’ll stay in the sport in some way.”

Scotsman Keatings’ finest moment came in his homeland when he captured the Commonwealth pommel horse crown in Glasgow, in 2014. He also won silver in the individual all-around and team events.

Keatings previously won an all-around silver medal at the World Championships in 2009, and also sampled plenty of success on the European stage.

He created a slice of history in the process back in 2010 when his European pommel horse triumph in Birmingham provided the first gold medal ever to be won by a British gymnast at a major championships.

Keatings reclaimed that title in Moscow, in 2013.
