The 16 year-old sensation won bronze in the Under 18 Men’s all-around event at Redbridge Sports & Leisure Centre in Ilford with a total score of 75.400.

He also earned silver on the floor, pommel horse and rings, and added another bronze to his collection in the vault.

Huntingdon head coach Paul Hall said: “Jake performed very well to be the top three in England in his first year in this category.

“It was a good start to what is shaping up to be a busy year for him. He wants to qualify for the European Junior Championships in Glasgow in August and is also hoping to be considered for the Youth Olympics.

“They are in Argentina in September and there’s a qualifier in Azerbaijan in May, so he could be doing a fair bit of globetrotting if it all goes to plan!”

Clubmate Teegan Milligan produced a super performance to earn an English medal as she took silver on the beam. Milligan finished sixth overall in the Espoir Girls category and Emilyse Birch shared 14th spot.

Elsewhere, Sol Scott finished a creditable 17th in the Under 12 Boys group with fellow Huntingdon prospects Niall Hooton, Ryan Cirino, and Bradley Cooper finishing 16th, 19th and 40th respectively in a field of more than 60 competitors.

Saffron Belfon impressed as she placed 17th overall in the Junior Women bracket with Liz MacFarlane (49th) and Takara Sides (64th) also working well over four apparatus.

Lottie Smith was another Huntingdon member to produce a pleasing performance when taking 17th place in a tough Senior Women category which was won by Olympic medallist Amy Tinkler.

Teegan Barnes and Tilly Allen also represented the club at senior level, finishing 36th and 40th respectively in the Women’s Senior all-around standings.

Harry O’Driscoll performed steadily on all apparatus to finish 14th in the Under 18 Men’s section while Tony Duchars won the ‘Louis Smith Pommel Horse Award’ for the best execution score with the least deductions throughout the entire senior competition.

Huntingdon gymnasts will now turn their attention to the British Championships next month. They are held in Liverpool from March 8 to 11.

And 19 year-old Benji Eyre has his sights set on featuring in another major event. He is in contention to be selected by Wales for the Commonwealth Games in April after competing well as a guest last weekend in the English event.

“We’ve got our fingers crossed for Benji,” added Hall. “We’ve had representation at the last six Commonwealth Games and it would be great to continue that sequence.”

Hall will be present at the Games in Australia himself as a coach for the Scottish team.
