Mark Spavins, the manager of Great Paxton, is relishing the prospect of taking on Hemingfords United in the final of the Hunts FA Scott Gatty Cup in March.
Cambs League Senior A side Paxton, who are second in their division, went to Ramsey Town of the Peterborough & District Premier on Saturday and won 4-0, while Hemingfords, also a Senior A side, recorded a 2-0 away win at Bluntisham Rangers in the other semi-final.
“It was a great result against a team in a higher league,” said Spavins. “It was a hard fought result and well deserved.
“To be fair, we dominated the game and if it hadn’t been for their goalkeeper Jordan Packi it could have been double the four that we got.”
Ryan Baxter opened the scoring for Paxton with a tap-in and Luke Dawson powered home a header from a Lee Clutterbuck corner for their second goal.
Baxter got the third on the half-hour mark and Michael Millward scored number four in the 78th minute. “We can now look forward to our third final in four years,” said Spavins. “And against a fellow Senior A side too. It will be a great game as we are two evenly matched teams.”
Arran Mackay and Thomas Whybourn scored the goals for Hemingfords in their win at Bluntisham, who are fourth in the Senior B division of the Cambs League.
“Our performance was one of real steel,” said the Hemingfords manager Brett Swales. “We defended well allowing our opponents only a couple of shots from range off target in the 90 minutes.
“We always looked a threat going forward with the Bluntisham goalkeeper probably the man of the match making three or four unbelievable saves.
“All the lads and I are delighted to get through to the final after losing to Paxton in another cup competition with two late goals. We are looking forward to putting that right with a win in the final.”
The venue for the final, scheduled for March 19, is yet to be confirmed.
This Saturday, there are two more semi-finals with the Hunts FA Junior Cup ties between Peterborough ICA Sports and Gransden, and Hemingfords United Reserves and Parkside to be contested.
