CHILDREN at Silks Farm Nursery School in Somersham have been tackling huge mushrooms, giant dice, bridges and other obstacle on their new crazy golf course.

The nine-hole course was officially opened last week by Scott Waterman, the club professional at Lakeside Lodge Golf Centre in Pidley.

During his visit Scott also gave the children their first golf lesson, showing them how to hold a putter and hit the ball.

"It is the first time that I have ever seen children as young as this play golf, and I found it to be both an exhilarating and rewarding experience," he said. "I think that it is a fantastic idea to introduce golf to children at such an early age, especially if it is promoted in an appropriate environment."

Nigel Swaby, director of Silks Farm Nursery School, added: "The golf course will be used by children as young as three, and in addition to having lots of fun, the children will benefit in many ways as it will help support the development of hand-eye coordination.

"In addition to a play activity for the children, the course will be used as a general teaching aid and will support colour recognition, numeracy, literacy, logic and problem solving development."
