GODMANCHESTER Rovers are still top of the Eastern Counties Division One table after another great win.

Having beaten Swaffham Town 7-1 last week, Goddy travelled to Ipswich Wanderers on Saturday and beat the strugglers 3-0 with James Hall scoring twice and Paul Bass once again getting on the scoresheet following his return from the Achilles injury that kept him out for three months.

However, despite the three points which kept them one-point clear at the top, joint manager Nev Nania wasn’t completely happy with the way his team performed, saying: “The reality was we were below par for the greater proportion of the game – but we just had too much in our locker for them.”

An early chance fell to James Hall when he was put through by Chris Hyem, but the striker’s shot was stopped well by the Ipswich goalkeeper. Further pressure started to tell on the hosts and in the 20th minute Jason King fed Joe Furnell who crossed the ball well from the left for Hall to rifle home.

In the 35th minute Godmanchester got their second from a flowing move which started at the back with Johnny Hall slipping his man and finding Mike Hyem. Hyem and King then linked up well before Bass drew the goalkeeper lobbed the ball over his head.

The second half started brightly for Ipswich and for a short period of time they came in to the game – but without really troubling the Goddy defence, who looked fairly comfortable.

So comfortable, in fact, that Nania and his co-manager David Hurst made three substitutions, taking the opportunity to give other members of the squad some match practice and time on the pitch.

In the 65th minute Chris Hyem found Mark Ling on the right who played a through ball to Hall. As the goalkeeper came out, Hall repeated his strike partner’s trick and lobbed him.

Nania said: “What was clear is we weren’t at our best today but we are showing a strength and team spirit and dedication to the cause which is pulling us through.” Unbeaten in 16 league games now, Godmanchester have matches in hand at the top of the table with just 12 games to go.

Next Saturday the team will be at Debenham LC, but in the quarter finals of the Ridgeons League Cup, not in the league. However, all three teams below Goddy – Whitton United, March Town United and Thetford Town – are also still involved in the competition, so there will be no danger of Rovers being deposed in their absence.
