GODMANCHESTER finally played their first home game of the season at Bearscroft Lane after extensive refurbishment, but the match ended in disappointment.

Visitors Brantham made the most of all the hype surrounding the first game as Rovers played below the standard they have set on their travels this season which have seen them in the upper echelons of the league.

Joint-manager David Hurst admitted that there was a lot of disappointment after the match. He said: "We never really tuned up for football with minds on other things. We lost our focus and the better team on the day won."

The visitors got off to a flyer and never looked back when Kieran Lawler crashed a shot past Ally Macunnally after just two minutes.

Brantham started the second half brightly and had a goal disallowed in the first few minutes - but they hit their second on 54 minutes to seal the win when Simon Head was left totally unmarked at the far post to nod home.

Rovers pressed and had some chances, with Musson making outstanding saves from Lee Boon and Rob Stamper but the home side never looked likely to salvage points on their big day.

Saffron Walden visit Bearscroft Lane tonight (Wednesday) and Rovers have a chance to eke out revenge on Saturday when they visit Brantham in the return.
