Godmanchester Rovers boss Matt Clements believes his players are returning to their brilliant best.

Clements was thrilled with the display that earned a 5-2 success at Swaffham for his fourth-placed side in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division last Saturday.

It was a second successive victory and five-star goal haul for the promotion hopefuls who will need to continue their fine form when entertaining second-placed Felistowe & Walton at the David Wilson Homes Ground this Saturday.

Clements said: “There is no doubt we faltered during November and December, but I sense the boys are getting right back to their best.

“The performance and the result were both very pleasing last Saturday as we backed up another equally as impressive victory at Newmarket on Boxing Day.

“They set us up nicely for a huge game against Felixstowe & Walton and the challenge is to keep the good run going.”

Rovers raced into a two-goal lead at Swaffham thanks to top-scorer James Hall and Tom Spark, but the hosts levelled before the break.

They responded with a fine second-half display as Michael Hyem quickly restored an advantage that was increased by captain Taylor Parr with a quarter-of-an-hour to go. Luke Seaber-Shinn hit a late clincher to put the result beyond doubt for the highest-scorers in the Premier Division.

But their proficiency in front of goal has not stopped Clements drafting in a new forward. John Yambasu has arrived from Cambs League side Over Sports.

Clements added: “John is very athletic and dynamic, and he can play anywhere in a front three.

“That’s the system we’re using at the moment and he will give us another excellent option to add to the quality we already have.”

Godmanchester then go to First Division side Downham Town on Tuesday for a League Challenge Cup quarter-final.

Clements plans to shuffle his pack for that fixture with a number of Under 18 prospects likely to be given their opportunity.
