NEV Nania says Godmanchester Rovers’ Easter weekend will be a tough one - but confidence is high going into their games against Mildenhall Town on Saturday and Wisbech Town on Monday.

Godmanchester drew 1-1 at Diss Town on Tuesday night – Paul Bass scoring their goal on the Norfolk-Suffolk border - and they haven’t lost a game in nine, picking up 23 points from a possible 27 since their last defeat, which was at home to Cambridge Regional College on January 12.

“That’s not bad, is it? We are up to seventh and looking good,” said the joint manager. “But we now have two hard games over the weekend against two teams in the top six.

“Mildenhall will want to prove themselves because we totally annihilated them at home [Goddy won 4-0 at the end of February] so no doubt they will be trying to get one back on us.

“Then, on Monday, we have Wisbech. They seem destined to win the league – they have their tails up and I would take them to be potential champions. So that will be a difficult one for us.

“But if we can get a point – possibly three – then we will be well happy.

“I think we have enough in our armoury to do it but whether we have all of our players available, we will have to wait and see.”

Goddy go into the weekend with their captain, Chris Hyem, a doubt after hurting a knee and missing the Diss game. Goalkeeper Rob Mackney is also taking his time to recover from an injury and his brother Carl Mackney will be his stand-in at Mildenhall with the former St Ives Town goalkeeper Niall Conroy, who is now with St Neots Town, becoming available for the home match against Wisbech.

Meanwhile, the manager of second placed Wisbech, Steve Appleby, told The Hunts Post’s sister paper The Wisbech Standard that Goddy won’t be easy opponents at Bearscroft Lane.

“It’s a massive weekend for us,” he said. “Goddy won’t be easy. They are a good footballing side and strong with it.”

Nania said: “It’s an important weekend for them, much more than it is for us – they are going for the championship, we are just trying to consolidate a top-eight place.

“The pressure isn’t really on us; we have demonstrated we are good enough to finish in the top eight.”
