Proud manager Matt Clements believes his Godmanchester Rovers aces deserve to be promoted.

Rovers climbed into second spot in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division courtesy of a 4-2 triumph against Brantham Athletic last night (Monday) in the sixth of seven successive home fixtures.

They now need to collect one more win from their final two matches - at home to Kirkley & Pakefield tomorrow night (Wednesday) and away at Ipswich Wanderers this Saturday – to secure a runners-up finish for the second season running.

That should not prove too big a task for a side who are unbeaten in league action since December 19 – winning 17 of their 18 matches in the five months since.

And while champions Norwich United look set to take the one available promotion spot from the Premier Division, Clements still hopes there is a way his men could secure a rise in class.”

He said: “A lot of work has been done off the pitch to get the club into a position where promotion is possible while my lads have been different class on the pitch for the vast majority of the season.

“We could find ourselves in the position of picking up 94 points and not winning the league.

“The reality is that these boys have progressed from last season, but look set to finish in the same position.

“It won’t be the end of the world if we are not promoted, but it would be a massive shame after such a good season.

“I honestly feel we could match any Step 4 side if playing the way we have done lately and I think we have very strong claims to be promoted.

“Hopefully there will be a team somewhere who don’t accept a promotion place and I would like to think we will be considered if that is the case.

“It would be very difficult to overlook what the club has achieved in the last two seasons.”

Rovers have picked up their three most recent victories during the past week.

Charlie Bowen headed the only goal late on against Long Melford last Wednesday before Rovers eased past bottom side Whitton United last Saturday.

Luke Brown tucked away the opening goal from the penalty spot after the visitors had been reduced to 10 men.

An own goal doubled Rovers’ advantage before Jonny Hall delivered the final blow in a 3-0 success.

Free-scoring teenage frontman Brown then bagged a brace in a 4-2 win against Brantham which also featured another effort from prolific defender Bowen. Micky Hyem also got in on the act during a performance that left Clements drooling.

He added: “The opening 45 minutes last night was the best performance the lads have produced all season.

“We were frighteningly good on and off the ball. It highlighted the massive development that has taken place during the season.

“The players motivate themselves superbly, they do their jobs brilliantly and they have been rewarded with a great run of results.”
