Godmanchester Rovers boss Matt Clements has hailed his centurions.

Free-scoring Rovers have crashed through the 100-goal barrier for the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division season in recent days.

Luke Brown’s opener in a 6-1 success against Swaffham Town last Wednesday carried the Rovers’ tally into three-figures for the league campaign – and they show no sign of taking their feet off the accelerator.

Brown went on to complete a hat-trick in that midweek romp – the first of seven successive home fixtures for Godmanchester at their David Wilson Homes Ground. Micky Hyem struck twice and Tom Spark completed the half-dozen haul.

The same players did the damage again last Saturday when Newmarket were seen off 4-1 - a 13th win during a 14-game unbeaten run stretching back to a Boxing Day win against the same opponents.

Spark’s opener was cancelled out as the sides went in level at the break, but Rovers took command in the second half. Spark restored the advantage on the hour with Brown extending it less than a minute later. Hyem clinched the points late on.

What makes Rovers’ goalscoring feat even better is the fact they lost leading scorer James Hall to higher-level Cambridge City at the beginning of February.

Boss Clements said: “It was a huge blow to lose James after he had scored so many goals. He had 27 and there is no doubt in my mind he would have got to 50 had he stayed with us for the whole season.

“But even when he was getting the headlines for his scoring exploits, we always had people chipping in from other areas and that has continued since he moved on.

“Micky is now past 20 goals for the season while lads like Tom and Austen Diaper are well into double figures.

“Luke has also done superbly since he came in following James’ departure. He’s into double figures himself and we’ve got players who have predominantly played in defence closing in on 10 goals each.

“To have scored more than a 100 goals in the league is a massive credit to all the lads in the team. We are relentless in the way we create chances and it is no exaggeration to say we could have scored even more.

“I wanted us to be an attacking team with players able to express themselves, and that has happened.”

Third-placed Rovers can also celebrate bettering the 75 points they managed in the whole of last season when finishing as runners-up.

They’ve already collected 76 points in the current campaign with the possibly of another 18 to follow in their final six matches.

They face arguably their toughest remaining test tomorrow night (Wednesday, 8pm) when hosting fourth-placed Felixstowe & Walton before the run of home fixtures continues when Brantham visit this Saturday.

Clements added: “When I arrived in the summer, I stressed the importance on ensuring we built on the success the club enjoyed last season.

“To better that points tally with half-a-dozen games still ahead is very pleasing and highlights the fact we’re making progress.

“We’re also going to finish considerably closer to Norwich United than last season and we just need to focus on continuing to pick up results.”
