After what joint manager Nev Nania described as a nightmare 3-2 win at FA Clacton on Tuesday night, Godmananchester Rovers can definitely finish third - but maybe even higher - with a final day defeat of Felixstowe & Walton on the Suffolk coast on Saturday.

With just one game each left to play in the Premier Division of the Eastern Counties League, Hadleigh United (80 points) top the table with Brightlingsea Regent (80) in second on goal difference. Third are Felixstowe on 78 points with both Godmanchester (fourth) and Gorleseton (fifth) on 77 points. Only the fact that Hadleigh’s goal difference is 16 more than Godmanchester’s puts them out of the race for the title.

“It could come down to goal difference for second though,” said Nania. “Everyone seems to be writing us off but if we win by three or four goals and Brightlingsea lose at Norwich United, who are the form tonight at the moment, then who knows? Maybe we will finish second.

“Let’s face it, we are very close from where we were earlier in the season. At worst we will be six points off the top, at best we will be on the same points as the champions.”

On Tuesday, the nightmare element of the evening happened on the A14, just the other side of Bury St Edmunds, when the team’s minibus had a blow out and there were problems removing the wheel. The journey was delayed by an hour and heavy traffic meant the game eventually kicked off at 850pm, 50 minutes after it was supposed to.

But the team played out of its skin and Nania said for the first 45 minutes it was their best performance of the season.

Missing the injured Chris Hyem (swollen ankle), Goddy borrowed former player Jason King from St Ives Town and the midfielder, Joe Furness and James Hall scored the goals to see them 3-1 at half-time. Clacton rallied in the second half and made it 3-2 with five minutes to go with an unstoppable 25-yarder.

“We had a bare 11 but it was a very good bare 11,” said Nania. “In the first half we were awesome - it was the best half we have played all season.”
