Godmanchester Rovers manager Matt Clements has vowed to ‘shake things up’ after his side slumped to a costly home defeat.

Rovers went down 4-2 to FC Clacton at the David Wilson Homes Ground last Saturday to drop to fourth place in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division.

And boss Clements could not hide his disappointment and frustration following a second sub-standard display in the space of three matches.

And what makes this reverse and a recent 5-0 drubbing at Kirkley & Pakefield all the more infuriating is the fact they sandwich a terrific 3-0 success over previously unbeaten table-toppers Norwich United.

Clements said: “We have completely undone the good work of the game against Norwich United due to the results either side of it.

“The defeat at Kirkley was a nasty surprise a few weeks ago and last Saturday against Clacton was nothing short of a surrender really.

“I can handle losing games, but I can’t stand for the manner in which we have been beaten recently.

“We have a lot of top players for this level of football and to produce the sort of performances that we have twice in our last three games is nowhere near good enough.

“We’ve got people who haven’t looked interested and haven’t even turned up in all honesty. The fact my 16 year-old goalkeeper was our best player against Clacton tells you everything you need to know about the game.

“It is my job to ensure this sort of performance does not happen again and I will do whatever I feel is necessary.

“I’m sure I’ll get a response from the boys at Newmarket on Boxing Day, just as I got a response against Norwich United after the Kirkley defeat, but we cannot become the sort of team that has to lose a game to win one.

“It is time to shake things up a bit and there may well be some new faces at training tonight.

“I’ve invited a few of the young scholars I work with at Histon to come over and that might be just what we need. Young lads tend to be fearless and not worried about money – they just want to play football.”

Top-scorer James Hall did briefly fire Rovers level in the first half against Clacton, but parity lasted less than 60 seconds.

Their deficit grew again in the opening minute of the second before a fourth Clacton goal with 12 minutes remaining sealed their fate.

Joe Peacock hit a late consolation for a Godmanchester side badly missing suspended skipper Taylor Parr.

Rovers face an early start on Boxing Day with their trip to Newmarket kicking off at 11.30am.
