GODMANCHESTER Rovers claimed a valuable win over their mid-table rivals in a tight match at Saffron Walden on Wednesday evening.

Tom Lloyd’s goal after 20 minutes proved decisive, though Goddy boss David Hurst said his side could have made matters more comfortable.

“We battled hard and created a good few chances in the first half. Maybe we could have finished a couple more to make the game safe.

“Paul Bass and James Hall had some half-chances, and it wasn’t until the final 20 minutes that Saffron Walden put the pressure on us.”

In their search for an equaliser, Walden resorted to heaving long balls into the Rovers box, but Hurst praised his team for their resilience.

“It was a great all-round team performance, but the centre-backs Nicky Hurst and Del Ray were magnificent. Up front, Paul Bass and James Hall were taking the pressure off our defence by holding up the ball really well and helping the defence to step out and regroup.”

Goddy currently sit in eighth in Ridgeons Division One, three points behind Saffron Walden in seventh.
