FA Cup Extra-preliminary Round

GODMANCHESTER Rovers boss David Hurst praised his side’s resilience after Goddy came from behind to earn a replay against Kempston Rovers in Saturday’s FA Cup extra-preliminary round.

In an entertaining fixture, Goddy conceded the opening goal shortly after half time, before striker Paul Bass struck to level the tie, forcing the game into a replay, due to be played last night (Tuesday).

Rovers survived a late scare when Hayden Beasley conceded a penalty, only for goalkeeper Carl Mackney to save.

“It must have been a terrific game to watch for the fans, but it was torturous for me being the manager,” said Hurst.

“Even though we conceded very early on in the second half – which shows they obviously weren’t listening to me at half time – I thought they showed enough grit and determination to bounce back and they really upped the tempo when it mattered.

“After Paul Bass equalised I thought we would go on and win the game, we had the chances to do so. We hit the bar on a couple of occasions, including a diving header from Matt Jones who was only five-yards out.

“But in the end I suppose we’re fortunate to still be in the competition, after we conceded a penalty with just five minutes to go. Luckily for us Carl Mackney pulled off a terrific stop.”

Hurst believes his squad are capable of producing better performances, and said he is prepared to tinker with the starting XI to find a winning formula this season.

“We have to take the positives from the game, but we know as a team we can play better than we did – if we play well, we can beat anybody on our day.

“All the substitutes did very well after coming on, so they deserve a chance to show what they can do.”
