GODMANCHESTER finished their East Anglian Premier League home campaign with a well-earned draw against champions Bury St Edmunds.

The match had been billed as a celebration of Bury retaining the title but Goddy clearly hadn't read the script and picked up one more point than their visitors to claim a moral victory.

Rain brought an early finish with 14 overs left, Bury still 62 runs short and under the cosh from the Goddy bowlers.

Goddy's performance was particularly remarkable given that captain and main strike bowler Bevis Moynan was unable to bowl after injuring his side 22 balls in.

Overnight rain had left a wet wicket and umpires ordered a 12.15pm start, much to the dismay of Bury skipper Kevin Brookes, who felt the game should not have gone ahead.

Bury won the toss and elected to field but, contrary to recent form, Goddy produced inspired batting with Matt Durrant (64) and Ollie Huggins (33) putting on an opening stand of 60.

Adam Cousins chipped in with 35 but a middle-order collapse prevented the home side reaching the total they had threatened to, eventually finishing on 178-8. Tony Palladino was the top Bury bowler with figures of 5-52.

Elliot Baldwin (2-35) and Paul Swannell (1-36) turned in good bowling performances, aided by fine catches from Swannell and Moynan before the rain ended play early.

Godmanchester play their final match of the season at Cambridge Granta on Saturday.
