Gallery: Players taken to hospital in Houghton & Wyton match

HOUGHTON and Wyton’s win over Castor and Ailsworth on Saturday was twice halted after players from each side sustained serious injuries.

Home batsman Tom Warman took a severe blow to the eye after edging a delivery, and was rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

Later in the game Castor and Ailsworth wicket keeper Andy Mazouris was knocked out after standing up to his pace bowler, and the ball was edged into his face. Mazouris was knocked unconscious and the game was halted for more than 30 minutes until paramedics could move him.

Houghton & Wyton Chairman Greg Andrell was batting with Warman at the time of the first injury.

“He was unlucky, because he pulled a short ball that took the edge and ended up hitting him in the eye. It was very serious, but fortunately he has been discharged now. He will be out of the game for a few weeks because of a burst blood vessel in his eye.”

Andrell had to phone for an ambulance again just a short time later after Mazouris sustained an injury in similar fashion.

“This time the only difference was the ball missed the batsman and felled the keeper,” he said. Mazouris was eventually conveyed to A&E but Andrell believed he found the strength to join his colleagues for a “small drink” after the match.

The top clash of the day in the Division 3 resulted, after all the injury problems, in a fine win for the home side. They scored 246-5 with Andrell (63) the main-stay of the innings. Warman (29) also contributed, managing to blast his runs from just 15 deliveries before dispatching himself to hospital.

The Castor openers made a solid start to the innings but after they had passed 30, the wickets began to tumble and Houghton’s Simon Claridge dominated the batsmen with four wickets. The visitors soldiered on, but finally fell to 163 all out.
