Seb Hayes heaped praise on the team who have given Huntingdon their best start, by a mile, to a Chromasport & Trophies United Counties League Premier campaign – and then tore into them for becoming complacent.

The manager is delighted they have 28 points from 10 games and are five points better off than this time last season, but if his players were looking to be told how wonderful they are, they’d have been disappointed.

“To have achieved what we have achieved with so many changes in personnel is down to their willingness to follow my instructions,” he said. “They are hungry and they want to work hard, but while I was of course happy with victory on Saturday, we played the bottom team. You know we’re the only unbeaten team in the league but I told them if they played like the last 30 minutes in other games we won’t stay unbeaten for much longer.

“There is a degree of complacency setting in lately. The workrate has dropped a bit, but they have been made well aware of my disappointment and taken the criticism on the chin.

“At 3-0 we were cruising, but we let them back into it and despite being 4-2 ahead, were hanging on for dear life at the end. When a team are fighting for their lives you can’t give them anything to fight for. We let the back into a game they should never have been in.”

A 30-yard effort from Pat Bexfield put Town in front after 19 minutes, with Jacob Joyce heading a second from Louie Medwynter’s excellent cross four minutes later. Sam Spencer scored a home third after 57 minutes and after Ryan Merrey’s 64th minute spot kick put Buckby on the scoresheet, Declan Rogers sealed the Cromwellians’ latest success with his eighth goal in six matches.

Elliott Herbert scored the second for Buckby after 84 minutes.

Huntingdon are at Woodbridge Town in the FA Vase on Saturday. Victory there and it could be worth around £1,000 to the club. “We’d like to get as far as last year, when we reached the third round,” said Hayes.
