Boss Matt Clements is overseeing a drastic makeover of his St Neots Town squad.

The Saints chief has drafted in three loan signings and one permanent recruit already this week with the prospect of two further captures in the coming days.

The familiar goalkeeping face of Finlay Iron has returned for another Saints spell while Clements has pushed through a second stay for another Cambridge United youngster, midfielder Lee Watkins.

Saints also completed the signing of two other midfield talents. Peterborough United man Andrea Borg - a Maltese Under 19 international - has arrived on loan while Portuguese teenager Jorginho Rei Do Mundo Gomes’ move was confirmed after international clearance was received.

All four of those players were set to be in the squad to face Leiston in a Southern League Premier Division clash tonight (Tuesday) until it was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Clements is also hopeful of snapping up a defender and a striker as he revamps a squad which fell into the relegation zone last week.

Clements told the Hunts Post: “The time has come to be ruthless. I know we can be much better than we have been and I’m confident we will prove that with the injection of new blood.

“This is not a case of me panicking and making knee-jerk signings as I’ve been aware of the need to strengthen the squad for a while.

“We didn’t start the season at all well and other disappointing results were then somewhat masked by the good run we had in the FA Cup.

“We went out of that competition and then bowed out of the FA Trophy early which really hurt us.

“Now we now need to ensure we give ourselves the best possible chance of climbing the league table. While we believe in the way we do things, it’s clear we needed to freshen up the personnel by adding experience to a young squad.

“I missed out on a couple of targets in the summer who chose to go to higher-level clubs and we also lost two men in Liam McDevitt and David Bridges who were close to being irreplaceable.

“We have a core group of players who are performing to the levels I expect, but there are other lads who haven’t lived up to my expectations. We’ve reached the point where changes are necessary and possible.

“We can’t afford to feel sorry for ourselves. We have to work hard to get out of the position we’re in.”

Clements admits it is inevitable there will be departures given the influx of new faces. That could happen ahead of a home date against second-placed Stourbridge this Saturday, 3pm.

First-choice defensive duo Taylor Parr and Russell Short are now suspended for that fixture after tonight’s postponement.
