St Ives Town Ladies need two points from their final two games to be certain of a first Cambs Women’s Premiership title.

Darren Marjoram's table-topping side moved closer to championship glory by knocking fellow title hopefuls Netherton United out of the running for top spot last Sunday.

Saints triumphed 1-0 at their Peterborough-based rivals thanks to a dramatic late strike from leading scorer Georgia Stancombe. She pounced after a free-kick into the box had been spilled.

Katherine Speed was earlier been denied by a post in the opening period before also flashing another effort wide in a closely-fought contest.

Stancombe's vital breakthrough did provoke a late rally from Netherton as they went in search of a leveller, but terrific work from the St Ives defensive duo of Ellie Brown and Mollie Flack ensured the danger was cleared.

Saints now travel to Netherton again this Sunday for their penultimate outing of the campaign before facing closest challengers Newmarket Town in their final fixture next Wednesday

Saints are currently five points clear of second-placed Newmarket and could sew up the title before facing them with another win against Netherton.
