Godmanchester Rovers hot-shot Tom Meechan’s scoring exploits have captured the attention of a club in the Scottish Championship.

The 44-goal striker has been invited for a trial by Alloa Athletic - a team currently sitting second bottom in the second tier of the game north of the border.

They are due to fly him up to Scotland to play in a behind-closed-doors friendly tomorrow (Thursday) against Dundee.

Meechan, 24, is under contract to Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division side Godmanchester until the end of next season.

Rovers co-boss Neville Nania said: "Alloa's chief scout got in touch and it is clear they are very interested in Tom. It could potentially be a very good opportunity for him although a move to Scotland would obviously mean a big change of lifestyle.

"There is no doubt in my mind Tom can play at a much higher level. He is a natural finisher and his game would become more refined with full-time training and coaching."

Meechan, who has also played for Over and St Ives Town, has also attracted interest from considerably closer to home after playing for the Cambridge United development side.

He scored one goal, had a hand in another and earned a penalty when helping the Cambridge team beat Leyton Orient 4-1 in a Final Third Development League match last Tuesday.

Nania added: "It is no secret Tom played for Cambridge and they are going to continue to monitor the situation."

Meechan helped Godmanchester collect four points over Easter as they continue their pursuit of a runners-up finish in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division.

Austen Diaper hit the only goal of a Saturday success at Mildenhall before they were held to a disappointing goalless stalemate by bottom side Ely at Bearscroft Lane on Monday.

Nania believes nine points from their remaining six games will be enough to secure second place.
