Ridgeons League Division One Godmanchester Rovers 1 Thetford 3 A LACK of defensive discipline cost a young Goddy side as they slipped to their first defeat of the season. After an encouraging opening day win and a midweek draw at Saffron Walden, Rovers came into the game in confident mood but they conceded an early goal as Thetford's Carl Pask scored after just five minutes. The home side battled hard to get themselves back into the game and did so seven minutes before the interval when Hayden Beasley rose to power in a header from a Tom Polis free-kick. After the break, Godmanchester looked the more likely of the sides to take the lead but they paid the price for not creating enough clear-cut chances when Stephen Hurst put the ball past his own goalkeeper. Just two minutes later, some more sloppy defending from the home side allowed Matt Zdrenka to snatch a third goal for Thetford, putting the game well beyond the home side's reach. Rovers did battle hard to claw it back as the game drew to a close but they rarely threatened in front of goal. Last week, goals from Paul Bass and Jon Brierley had earned Rovers a point after going two goals behind at Saffron Walden. Godmanchester travel to table-topping Debenham LC on Saturday.
