The strength of the Goddy squad is likely to be tested tonight (Wednesday) when at least six of Saturday’s team will be unavailable for a home League Cup tie against Haverhill Borough, but Godmanchester Rovers joint boss Nev Nania is still confident he can parade a team to continue the goalscoring exploits.
Especially since it’s a cup tie.
“We’ve been going at around four or five goals per cup game,” he said. “I’d like to think we can keep that trend going. It’ll be a good test of our resources.”
On Saturday, it was just one of those games. You know the sort, where your team does everything but score and winds up beaten when the opposition makes the most of their one opportunity.
Sound familiar? It does to Nania since that’s what happened to his high-flying Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties Premier team.
A pity, really, since they would have liked to continue their sequence of victories to mark the minute’s silence for committee man Buffy Bavester before the kick-off against Fakenham Town.
The trouble is, it was one of those games.
“We’ve had three 1-0 defeats now and this one was down to a failure to make anything of the chances we had,” he said.
“We played with the wind behind us in the first half and pretty much pressed all the time. They defended extremely well and then went and scored with a speculative shot with the wind in the second period.
“It was probably going over, but it dropped in the wind and swerved in to the top corner.”
Tom Meachan hit the post with a long-range wind-assisted drive in the first half, Jamie Blackwell hit the bar in the second and the points were decided when Fakenham’s Ashley Jarvis sidestepped a challenge 25 yards out and with the next movement fired in the only goal of the game.
Nania replaced Jack Watson and Matty Bannister with Taylor Parr and Ben Yeomans in an attempt to force the issue, but Fakenham held out.
“On another day we’d have probably scored five or six goals and they didn’t really create a chance worthy of the name,” said the manager.
“It was frustrating, sure, but you have to remember this was only game 12 of 38. There is a long, long way to go. All things being equal we will do better than last season if nothing else.”
