A DEPLETED St Ives suffered their second league defeat in three games against mid-table Raunds Town at Westwood Road on Saturday.

Injuries meant that managers Warren Everdell and Jez Hall were forced to pick from the reserves and under-18 teams, and the result now puts the Saints out of the running for a top-five finish.

Everdell pointed to a fixture list that has seen St Ives play 17 times in six weeks. "We've been picking up injuries through playing so many games - on Saturday we had seven or eight players out, which makes life difficult. The youngsters did well, but overall we made too many basic errors."

Raunds took the lead after 16 minutes through captain Glenn Turner, but St Ives were level only eight minutes later when Carl Foreman prodded home a parried Junior McDougald shot.

The hosts were behind again on 29 minutes, when Rushden and Diamonds loanee James Freshwater scored, and the teenager wrapped up the points with his second just after half-time.

St Ives now turn their attention to the Hinchingbrooke Cup semi-final against Rushden and Higham tomorrow evening (Thursday), when they should be strengthened by the return of four players from injury.

"There's still plenty to play for this season," said Everdell. "We've got two cup semi-finals and a final coming up, so we'll be doing our best to win all of them.
