Godmanchester Rovers 4, Wootton Blue Cross 2 (aet)

GODMANCHESTER progressed to the next round of the cup after an open game against Wootton Blue Cross.

Wootton had the best of the early exchanges but Goddy came into the game after the opening 15 minutes.

Matt Peacock's effort was saved by the Wooton keeper and the visitors took advantage of this miss to take the lead.

Keeper Armitage spilled an effort and Johnson couldn't miss from two yards out to give Blue Cross a half-time lead.

The second half saw chances at both ends but Godmanchester finally got the equaliser after 83 minutes when Smith put Carmanati through to volley the equaliser from six yards out to send the game into a period of extra-time.

Wooton were awarded a penalty kick which was converted but Goddy refused to lie down. They pressed forward and a volley from the edge of the area by Mark Hurst hit the bar and went out for a corner.

Carmanati swung over the setpiece which was met by Burling who scored with a header.

Then, just three minutes later, Rovers were ahead when a shot from Carmanati was deflected to Peacock, who made no mistake from 10 yards out.

The second half of extra time saw Wootton trying to press forward for the equaliser, but the hosts broke upfield and Burling danced around the keeper to complete the scoring and send Rovers through.

Division One

Walsham Le Willows 2, Godmanchester Rovers 0

TWO goals in the last three minutes condemned Ian Jackson's side, who put in a good enough performance to get something from the game against second-placed Walsham.

The visitors started the match at a high tempo and were camped in their opponents half for the opening 15 minutes.

During that spell, there were good chances for Tom Ingram, Phil Weavers, David Blake and Chris Burling but fine keeping kept Rovers at bay.

Walsham started to get into the game after 20 minutes but Godmanchester's defence held firm and Rovers continued to dominate in terms of possession and chances created.

After the break, the hosts looked better value, and were kept out only by a fine save from Ian Baker.

From the resulting corner, Walsham's Newman got on the scoresheet and, as the visitors pressed for the equaliser, the hosts took advantage from a midfield mistake from Godmanchester to seal the points.

Needingworth United 1, WestWratting 2

UNITED dropped valuable points at home against a very hard working Wratting side. The visitors started well and took the lead from a setpiece after half an hour and they doubled their lead within a minute, with a fine strike from outside the box and went in at half time with a deserved lead.

This was a test of United's character and the second half was a very different affair, with the hosts pinning their opponents in their half for long periods.

They eventually pulled a goal back when Olly Verrall fired home from inside the box but try as they might, United couldn't find an equaliser.

Fenstanton 3, Bluntisham Res 1

FENSTANTON left it very late before securing all three points against a battling Bluntisham Reserves at Hall Green Lane.

Fenny dominated possession in the first half without creating too much trouble for the Bluntisham side.

Until Chris Collett opened the scoring for the home side by finishing the move he started himself from close range before the break.

In the second period, Fenny started brighter but it was the visitors who equalised when Steve Ellis hit home a low shot off the post.

There was more trouble for the home side when Barry Denston saw red after intervening in a fracas in the middle. Blunty looked determined to take a share of the points with Fenny failing to capitalise on a number of chances but in the dying minutes, Fenstanton skipper Richard Lowey popped up from left-back to squeeze his low drive through a crowded box to regain the lead.

Seconds later, Dan Attfield made it three when he lobbed the keeper following neat work from Steve Halliday.

Somersham Res 0, Needingworth Res 2

UNITED'S reserves kept up their promotion bid with a workmanlike performance at Somersham. Matt Walker's thunderbolt was the highlight of the match.

St Neots and District Sunday League Premier Division

Riverside Rangers 3, Buckden Village 1

RANGERS continued their good run of form after seeing off Buckden despite being forced into making four changes from the previous week.

After 20 minutes, Rangers were ahead when wing-back Danny Bevan supplied the perfect cross for Carl Foreman who made no mistake.

Foreman was on hand again to score goal number 21 of the campaign, this time from the spot after his strike partner had been fouled.

Foreman then turned provider as his incisive ball found Stevie Thompson and he stroked the ball home.

After the break, Buckden threw everything at the sturdy defence of Rangers and the visitors reduced the defecit.

However, it wasn't enough as Rangers hung on to the three points thanks to great defending from Stuart Wood and Darren Fry, and some super keeping from Gavin Armitage.

League Division Two

RH Lions 3, Watertight Wanderers 1

AFTER two defeats in the cup, RH Lions got back to winning ways with a 3-1 victory in their first league game of 2006.

Lions started well and dominated possession in the first half but missed countless chances before the deadlock was broken by Luke Johnson, who fired an unstoppable volley from eight yards out after a goal mouth scramble.

Watertight came back into the game after the break, but they never really looked like scoring thanks to a strong defensive effort, especially from MoM Dan Howard.

Lions eventually doubled their lead when David Harrison climbed well and powered his header past the despairing keeper.

Watertight did pull one back though with three minutes left but Gavin Howard converted from the sport after Rob Smith was pulled down by the visiting keeper.

THS Southoe 4, Sapley Rovers 1

AN understrength Rovers travelled to Southoe with three key players out, and this contributed in no small part to the scoreline.

The hosts started the brighter and were rewarded with an early goal before Sapley's Jezz Smith levelled with a textbook volley from the edge of the box.

Despite Smith's cracker, Southoe were back in front before halftime and extended their lead after the break, despite Sapley asserting some dominance over the game.

MoM for Rovers were Owen Jones and Adam Godmon.
