United Counties League Premier DivisionSt Neots 2, Woodford 1ST NEOTS' recent signing Jason Darvall, making only his second appearance for the club, claimed the two second half goals that extended their good run of form and made it four wins and a draw in their last five games. Woodford should possibly have got something from the game, after bombarding the St Neots goal for the last 20 minutes, but to no avail. The two sides looked evenly matched in a cagey first half in which neither team gave an inch. There were chances at both ends, firstly, Gary Walker saw his speculative effort fly over the bar before Nicky Hurst cleared off the line from Carl Standen, with keeper Steve Young out of position.Young recovered quickly and made an important reflex save to push away a close range angled shot from Lewis Travers. At the other end, St Neots best chances came from set pieces with Steve Kuhne shooting wide while more good defensive play from the home side saw Damian Matthews clear Ben Milner's goal-bound header. Three minutes before the break a Russell Lawes corner went over the visiting keeper but rebounded from the crossbar before being hacked away.St Neots had their best spell of the match in the first quarter of an hour after the break, when they looked the better side. Gary Walker had a penalty shout refused, but after 49 minutes the deadlock was broken when his miss hit shot fell kindly for Jason Darvall, who made no mistake from close range. Matt Endersby then shot over the bar but on the hour, Mark Franklin deceived the defence with a cross that was cleverly flicked on by Steve Kuhne for Darvall, who volleyed past Matt Finlay to double Saints' lead. Woodford fought back and 11 minutes from time, Ben Milner produced a stunning shot on the turn that flew into the net before Young had time to move. St Neots sent on Simon Claridge for Gary Walker, for his first appearance for four months following surgery, and it was then left to the St Neots defence to hold out to record what might prove to be a significant result for both sides.
