The annual Huntingdon Rowdies summer tournament spectacular attracted young footballers from far and wide last weekend - but there was no shortage of local success to celebrate.

A whopping 129 teams, featuring more than a thousand players, competed across 11 age groups at Jubilee Park with many trophies staying in this area.

St Neots Town teams triumphed in the Under 10 and Under 11 sections while Godmanchester Rovers White ruled supreme at Under 12.

St Ives Rangers Blue Sox took the Under 13 spoils and Priory Parkside Black captured the Under 14 crown.

Acting Huntingdon Rowdies secretary Andrew German said: “The tournament was a real success with teams travelling from as far afield as Essex, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire to take part. That highlights the regard in which our event is held.

“Our aim at Rowdies is to get as many children as possible out exercising and playing football, and it was terrific to see all age groups from six to 16-year-olds catered for during the two days.

“The tournament is always the culmination of a lot of hard work and as with previous years, we will look to invest the funds raised over the weekend in the improving of our facilities to maintain and grow the club.”

The non-competitive Under 6 section along with the Under 7 and Under 8 competitions were played in a five-a-side format with the remaining age groups being six-a-side.

The 2017 staging of the tournament has already been scheduled for the weekend of June 24/25 next year.

The next tournament of this summer to be staged locally is by Little Paxton Colts over the weekend of July 23 and 24 with seven age groups ranging from Under 7 to Under 13.
