Fenstanton’s assistant manager Tom Tilbury said the Cambs League Senior A team enjoyed playing their game on the 3G pitch at St Ives Outdoor centre on Saturday – especially as they won 2-0.
Fenstanton beat Comberton United on the state-of-the-art artificial surface to keep their outside chance of promotion to the Premier Division alive with Luke Ackerman and Josh Turner scoring the goals.
But Tilbury admitted it is going to take meltdown from those above sixth-placed Fenstanton for promotion to be achieved this year. “We have a very slim outside chance,” said Dom Moody’s assistant. “But there’s always a chance.
“It was a different game against Comberton because it was on the 3G surface. We train on that surface but playing a real game on it was different. It was faster. It was good to play on a surface of such good quality. It was good to get a clean sheet and it was a good result.”
At the top of the table sit Gamlingay United with 42 points – but they have played more games than any other team in the division. In second are Great Paxton who are 11 points adrift – but they have four games in hand.
The third Huntingdonshire team in the division are Hemingfords United who are currently in mid-table.
Somersham Town continue to lead the way in the Senior B division and look set for a return to the A division. Fourth-placed Bluntisham Rangers also have a chance of going up but will need to win their games in hand and hope that others slip up.
Mid-table Needingworth United actually had a game on Saturday but lost 5-3 away to Witchford 96. Matt Cox, Dave Roberts and Dan Sherlock were Needingworth’s goalscorers.
At the bottom of the table, St Ives Rangers are seemingly doomed to be relegated with one win and one draw from 18 games, but minus two points because of a six-point deduction.
Hemingfords United Res should be safe from the drop if they pick up points from their games in hand.
